Edgartown Race Weekend 2024
March 26, 2024
America's Cup Trivia you Probably Don't Know
Edgartown Yacht Club's famous ‘Round-the-Island Race ('RTI), which originated in 1938, was styled after the 1851 race around the Isle of Wight in England, which was the course that launched the America's Cup.
The distance around Martha's Vineyard (55 miles) is but a few miles longer; both courses have views of cliffs, headlands, villages, and open water; and the tidal currents and wind effects are important in both.
Now the ‘RTI, at age 87, is one of America's oldest distance races, and it's rolled into Edgartown Race Weekend, which also features a preceding two days of fun yet challenging ‘Round-the-Sound Races. Although no Hundred Guinea Cup is up for grabs, there is the prestigious VENONA TROPHY at stake for the overall winner of the ‘RTI, a prize that has been won by some of the biggest names in sailing.
Dates for Edgartown Race Weekend are Thursday, June 20 through Saturday, June 22; races are open to PHRF-NE (including Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, and Doublehanded), and Multihulls. 'RTS races are scored separately from 'RTI and have their own trophies. Teams can sign up for either or both, and the first 50 paid registrants receive two free mooring days.
